ENERGY UTILISATION
Describe your project or startup in a few words
I repurposing unsold fruit into pig feed, advising farmers on sustainable energy, and building a website to manage bookings and promote your services.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Energy Utilization: A Path to Sustainable Food Systems Effective energy utilization is key to creating sustainable food systems. Many fruit sellers face losses when unsold produce perishes. Instead of discarding it, I buy this food at a discount and transform it into pig feed, reducing waste and benefiting livestock farmers. I also help farmers utilize animal waste sustainably. I provide guidance on composting for fertilizer and advise on biogas production for cooking and electricity. This creates a closed-loop system, turning waste into valuable resources. My website will manage these services, connect farmers and sellers, and raise awareness through online campaigns. Together, we can reduce waste, improve food security, and create a more sustainable future.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Tackling Food Waste and Resource Loss in Food Systems My project addresses two key problems: 1. Food Waste: Many fruit sellers lose money when unsold produce spoils. This creates economic losses and environmental burdens. My solution: buying this food at a discount and transforming it into pig feed, reducing waste and benefiting livestock farmers. 2. Resource Inefficiency: Farmers often struggle to dispose of animal waste, leading to environmental pollution and wasted resources. My solution: providing guidance on composting and biogas production, turning waste into fertilizer and energy sources. By connecting these two challenges, I create a closed-loop system that benefits everyone: food sellers, livestock farmers, and the environment.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
Here are three major benefits of the product/service my project offers: 1. Reduced Food Waste: By buying unsold produce and turning it into animal feed, we significantly reduce food waste, minimizing economic losses for fruit sellers and decreasing environmental impact. 2. Sustainable Resource Management: Converting animal waste into fertilizer and biogas creates a closed-loop system. This promotes resource efficiency, reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers, and generates clean energy. 3. Increased Economic Opportunities: The project creates economic opportunities for farmers and livestock producers by providing affordable animal feed and valuable resources. This supports local economies and strengthens food security.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
My project primarily targets three key groups: 1. Fruit Sellers: These individuals face significant financial losses due to unsold produce going to waste. My project provides them with a valuable outlet for their excess fruit, turning it into a resource for animal feed. 2. Livestock Farmers: This group benefits from the availability of affordable and sustainable animal feed, contributing to their economic well-being and reducing reliance on traditional feed sources. 3. Local Communities: This project contributes to a cleaner environment by reducing food waste and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Additionally, the production of biogas provides a renewable energy source for local communities.

5
02.12.02 Responsible consumption and production - Justification
My project contributes to the 'Responsible consumption and production' objective: 5 - Somewhat Agree Responsible consumption and production - Justification: My project promotes responsible consumption and production through: • Reducing Food Waste: By finding productive uses for unsold produce, we reduce the overall amount of food that goes to waste, promoting more responsible consumption patterns and reducing the environmental footprint of food production. • Circular Economy Principles: The project embodies circular economy principles by turning waste (unsold fruit and animal manure) into valuable resources (animal feed, fertilizer, and biogas). This closed-loop system minimizes waste and maximizes resource utilization. • Sustainable Agriculture: The project supports sustainable agricultural practices that minimize environmental impact, promote resource efficiency, and contribute to a more circular food system.
02.13.01 My project contributes to the Climate action goal
6
02.13.02 Climate action - Justification
• Directly tackles food waste: Food waste is a significant contributor to climate change due to methane emissions from landfills. By rescuing unsold fruit, we prevent it from rotting, thus reducing methane release into the atmosphere. • Reduces reliance on conventional feed production: Our pig feed production diverts fruit from the waste stream, reducing the need for conventional feed production, which often has a high environmental impact due to deforestation, water usage, and fertilizer production. • Promotes renewable energy: We advise farmers on using animal waste for biogas production, a renewable energy source that reduces reliance on fossil fuels, a key driver of climate change. While our project doesn't directly address carbon emissions from transportation or industrial processes, our efforts to reduce food waste, promote sustainable feed production, and encourage renewable energy contribute significantly to mitigating climate change.
02.14.01 My project contributes to the Life below water goal
3
02.14.02 Life below water - Justification
My project contributes to "Underwater Life" by promoting sustainability on land, which indirectly benefits ocean health. Reducing food waste and encouraging renewable energy through biogas production helps mitigate climate change, a major threat to marine ecosystems. Furthermore, promoting sustainable agricultural practices like using animal waste for fertilizer reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers, which can lead to harmful runoff and algal blooms in coastal waters. While our project is land-based, it contributes to a broader effort to protect our oceans.
02.15.01 My project contributes to the Life on land goal
6
02.15.02 Life on land - Justification
• Combating food waste: Food waste contributes to deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. By rescuing unsold fruit and diverting it from landfills, our project directly addresses this issue, reducing pressure on land resources. • Promoting sustainable agriculture: Our focus on using animal waste for fertilizer encourages circular practices in agriculture, minimizing the need for synthetic fertilizers, which contribute to soil degradation and pollution. • Encouraging renewable energy: Promoting biogas production from animal waste reduces the need for fossil fuels, which contribute to deforestation and climate change, further impacting terrestrial ecosystems. While our project primarily focuses on food waste and agricultural practices, these actions contribute to a broader movement towards sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation, supporting the "Life on Land" goal.

3
02.16.02 Peace justice and strong institutions - Justification
My project's contribution to "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions" is a 3 . While it primarily focuses on environmental sustainability, there are indirect benefits. Sustainable development can reduce poverty and inequality, factors often linked to conflict. Promoting transparency and accountability in agricultural practices can also contribute to good governance and stronger institutions. However, my project doesn't directly address conflict resolution, justice, or institutional reform
02.17.01 My project contributes to the Partnerships for the goal
6
02.17.02 Partnerships for the goal - Justification
• Collaboration is key: My project relies heavily on partnerships to achieve its objectives. It involves collaborating with vendors, farmers, and potentially other stakeholders like waste management organizations or energy providers. • Shared benefits: These partnerships create a win-win situation. Vendors benefit from reducing food waste, farmers benefit from access to affordable feed and resources for biogas production, and consumers ultimately benefit from a more sustainable food system and energy production. • Community engagement: My project aims to engage the community through outreach, education, and potentially through collaborative initiatives to promote sustainable practices. While my project is still in its early stages, it emphasizes collaboration and partnership as core elements of its success, demonstrating a commitment to working together towards a shared goal of sustainability.
