Describe your project or startup in a few words

This project aims to improve livelihoods and eliminate low income earners through establishment of small farm -based enterprises.It aims in providing young domestic animals and vegetable seedlings to low income families for them to grow and nurture.

01.01 Describe your startup in more detail

This project came into mind when my parents incurred heavy losses after the death of five dairy cows that were bought with their life long investment.This totally broke them causing a massive blow to our whole family as the only source of income had disappeared. This situation caused me to reason and think of how many such farmers have incurred such losses or even greater ones due to misinformation or lack of advice from qualified professionals.I therefore thought to start a project of advising my neighbors who are farmers on how to keep their livestock in their small parcels of land as we're located in an urban area with land scarcity. Moreover, encourage people to be involved in more animal keeping e.g. goat rearing which is much more sufficient, time-sensitive, energy -saving and lucrative business that will help them save funds used to buy milk and also help them earn little funds for selling the milk . I also encourage them to rear chicken that are very adaptive to all environment

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

The main problem I'm trying to eliminate is poverty. Families that have invested in animal farming have incurred massive losses leading to immense poverty. Also families that have little space in their homesteads can input an extra source of income to increase their funds this eliminating poverty .

01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).

Educating community members on sustainable ways of carrying out agriculture will not only benefit the farmer but also Kenya as a country.Kenya has a very high percentage of unemployment leading to high crime rate but this can be turned around if these people can utilize their small spaces at home for work purposes and be their own boss. Secondly,this will help reduce the rate of climate change as these farmers will be forced to recycle organic waste from their houses and feed their animals whilst still using the animal waste as manure in their small kitchen gardens instead of fertilizers. This will also lead to a country of self sustainance as youths will be able to feed themselves and the government will not have to acquire grants or loans inorder for them to create job opportunities for youths and become bounded by some negative listings on these grants and loans.

01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?

My startup project is aimed at serving all Kenyan citizens including children,youths and adults. Sensitizing learners in school to implement such methods at their homes will help them learn and be more active . This will encourage youths to start their own businesses and grow their enterprises without only depending on white collar jobs . The adults who are already farmers and have not been very fruitful in their ventures to get training and improve their farming skills. This project doesn't only involve one geographical zone but involves both the urban and rural areas as both have the capacity and space for small scale farming

This is a solo project at the moment as it is just me as a university student advising my fellow neighbors at home how to improve their farming with the little knowledge I've been able to acquire with two years of learning in an institution of higher learning and research . However it would be my joy if more people with similar visions and wants would come on board eventually and assist in this humanitarian project . I'd also be very happy if I'd be able to reach the young mothers who have had teenage pregnancies and therefore quit school to be the main beneficiaries of this project

Poverty stricken families are the majority in my home area and it breaks my heart to look at them getting poorer and poorer by the day instead of elevating themselves,this doesn't mean that they are not hardworking people,on the contrary they are very determined but the lack of strategy and guidance causes their situation to deteriorate . This project therefore is a simple one and very easy for those who are uneducated can easily understand a d adopt quickly and is very familiar with them and it will very easily provide a source of income to them thus eliminating poverty.

When each family keeps a certain species of animals such as goats, cows, swine, poultry e.t.c. this will provide a source of food for them . Poultry are a very good source of protein to human beings. Cows and goats produce milk,meat and hides and skins. Sheep produce wool and mutton . Pigs produce pork . Therefore ,each these animals provide food for the families this putting a stop to hunger in the country. Also increase in production of local goods will lead to the reduction of low quality imports thus consumption of high quality foods

Rearing of animals at home also influences farming of vegetables and fruits on small parcels of land this maximizing all the available space. Consumption of fresh produce from the garden and also getting fresh animal produce will lead to a healthier lifestyle compared to consumption of processed food. Also such jobs require the farmer to be hands-on therefore they are very active and maintain a very fit and healthy lifestyle.

This project will mainly focus on those left at home with no form of employment and those involved in small scale farming practices.In Kenya ,most married women and girls are left home to care for the household and give birth to children. We aim at reversing this life long myth of only the father can be the breadwinner of the family and also incorporating a woman's contribution to the economics of the household.It also creates a form of economic independence for women enabling them to earn their respect.

When people keep their own animals and grow some of their vegetables in the little spaces found at home they promote responsible production of such vegetables. This method enables them to be much more healthy and also consume healthy and fresh produce without purchase of processed foods which cost a lot more than homegrown products. Co-dependency between animal enterprise and crop enterprise helps maintain a stable ecosystem as they rely on each other thus saving on costs and being environment friendly.

This project would greatly impact climate change positively as it would reduce amount of chemicals used to grow vegetables and preserve animal products as they will now be available from home and be very healthy. Crops and animals are also very co-dependant i.e. manure obtained from the animals will be used to fertilize plants in the garden while refuse from the farm can be used to feed the chicken or goats.

This project aims in maximizing available land despite the size as it can range to even 40*80 plots of land with a households. This therefore decreases the incidence of land degradation through miscellaneous ways of planting and livestock keeping e.g. overgrazing.

06.08 Justification for my startup

This idea is an agricultural idea from a young lady who is passionate about agriculture,animals and climate change and this is very scarce in the current generation today . We tend to forget about agriculture and focus on more modern ways to life forgetting were solely dependant on food for life . If we fail to support and improve agricultural projects now before it's too late we'll be an intelligent but hungry generation of people.

My main competition are large scale farmers, chemical producing companies who may feel threatened by losing their customers not to their fellows but by them depending on themselves for food and healthy food .
