Describe your project or startup in a few words
Iko Fresh Africa: A fresh tilapia supply company for the Kenya domestic market, focused on premium, consistent supply of fresh fish to vendors of all sizes. Based on supply from sustainable, traceable farmed production in the Lake Victoria region.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
With our background in fresh produce supply, our initial focus is to offer the same service level to customers in urban areas in Kenya as the export market has required for decades. Developing a strong foundation within the value chain with a market base supplied from existing farmed tilapia production in Lake Victoria is our focus. Initially, this market linkage operation delivers for both supplier and end user by connecting both for consistency and value. Our supply base ranges from small scale farmer through to larger commercial farms, many of their challenges remain the same irrespective of size; consistent market access. Iko Fresh Africa's focus is to work collaboratively with other farms to provide a consistent supply base into the market. This will move from 1,000kg per week to 10,000kg per week in the next 6 months. Our second phase is to backfill the market developed with our own 500,000kg farmed production base in Lake Victoria, currently in the development phase.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Kenya and Nairobi's growing population has a higher demand for nutritious, protein-rich food sources daily. Fish delivers as the most cost effective source. However, the local supply chain struggles to meet this demand. Plummeting wild caught stocks and farmed production still in its relative infancy produce a deficit of fresh fish of 450,000mt/year in Kenya. Retailers of all size rely on consistent quality and supply of product. When either are compromised, so is the future potential demand. 'Mama Samaki' and small restaurants are the preferred retail point where fish is supplied to the broader customer base. Erratic fish supply reduces their customer base and market opportunity. Farmed supply is increasing, however, individual producers often do not have supply 52 weeks a year, creating a market defecit. Iko Fresh Africa is focused on the initial major challenge of linking the challenges of the production supply base with the required consistency customers demand.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
1. Market linkage: contribute to a more reliable and consistent supply of tilapia by linking established farms with small-scale vendors and restaurants in Nairobi. 2. Affordable, consistent protein supply: Protein shortage in the human diet has health consequences. Of all animal based proteins, fish is the most affordable in terms of pricing, however less available in terms of supply. Our market linkage and own production adds to food security. 3. Economic growth and job creation: We will support local economies by creating job opportunities for small-scale fish vendors (Mama Samaki), small farmers through to large scale farms, and workers in the supply chain. 4. Sustainability and environmental responsibility: By integrating sustainable practices such black soldier fly (BSF) as a substitute fish food. Local small scale farmers can contribute to the value chain and generate revenue by producing and selling BSF back to iKo Fresh Africa as a fish food source made from organic waste.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Consumers: Our premium tilapia products will target the broader base of consumers in Nairobi who seek nutritious and high-quality protein options. We provide them with a consistent and reliable supply of fresh tilapia, meeting their preferences for affordable animal protein sources. Small-scale fish vendors (Mama Samaki): Our product aggregation and reliable supply chain will benefit 'Mama Samaki' by providing them with a consistent source of high-quality tilapia. This will enable them to expand their business and meet the demands of their customers more effectively. Restaurants and eateries: We will cater to restaurants and eateries in Nairobi by offering them more affordable premium tilapia products for their menus. Local communities and economies: By creating job opportunities in fish farming, supply chain management, and retail, we will contribute to the economic growth of local communities.
