Describe your project or startup in a few words
Aquaculture Barn Limited (ABL) is revolutionizing the aquaculture industry in Kenya by integrating automation in production and e-commerce to streamline the value chain.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
We are a dynamic and innovative company established in 2022, born from the passion of 12 unemployed young graduates. Our mission is to empower small and medium-scale fish farmers by providing them with cutting-edge solutions and resources. At ABL, we have developed a state-of-the-art hatchery that utilizes a Membrane Bioreactor System (MBR) to recycle domestic wastewater for fingerlings production. This sustainable approach not only conserves water but also reduces environmental impact. Additionally, the wastewater from fish production is repurposed for crop irrigation, creating a closed-loop system that maximizes resource utilization. Our entire operation is powered by solar energy, further minimizing our carbon footprint.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The aquaculture industry in Kenya faces several challenges, including: 1. Limited access to quality fingerlings: Many farmers struggle to obtain healthy and disease-free fingerlings, which are crucial for successful fish production. 2. Inefficient production systems: Traditional aquaculture practices often lead to low productivity, high resource consumption, and environmental degradation. 3. Lack of market access: Small-scale farmers face difficulties in accessing markets for their fish products, leading to low profitability. ABL addresses these challenges by providing farmers with access to high-quality fingerlings, implementing advanced aquaculture systems that optimize productivity and sustainability, and leveraging e-commerce platforms to connect farmers directly with consumers.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
1. Increased productivity and profitability: Our advanced aquaculture systems, combined with access to quality fingerlings, enable farmers to achieve higher yields and maximize their profits. 2. Environmental sustainability: By recycling wastewater and utilizing solar energy, we minimize the environmental impact of fish production and promote sustainable practices. 3. Improved market access: Our e-commerce platform provides farmers with a direct link to consumers, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring fair prices for their products.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Our primary target beneficiaries are small and medium-scale fish farmers in Kenya. These farmers often lack the resources and knowledge to implement modern aquaculture practices. We also cater to female fish traders who play a crucial role in the fish value chain. By increasing fish production and providing market access, we empower these women and enhance their livelihoods
