BIG FAMILY WASTE MANAGEMENT involves collection of waste from households and companies in Jomvu Subcounty of Mombasa County and recycling it by transforming the waste into valuable products which can add a lot of value in the waste collected.

01.01 Describe your startup in more detail

BIG FAMILY WASTE MANAGEMENT is an business organisation that started unofficially in 2019.It was officially registered in Febuary 2023.It is a waste management business which involves collection of waste from households and companies in Jomvu Subcounty of Mombasa County and recycling it by transforming the waste into valuable products which can add a lot of value in the waste collected. This value addition brings profits to the business while at the same time the environment from pollution. The business is at its early stages of Market entry stage. It was started from increased dumping of waste in our area . A huge number of households in our community was dumping and burning waste openly and everywhere in our area hence polluting the environment. . The project when started had 4 male workers and two ladies. Mostly there were two male directors that managed operations and four workers(Two male and two female) who were doing garbage collection activities. We conducted awareness activ

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

We started the project due to increased dumping of waste in our area . A huge number of households in our community were dumping and burning waste openly and everywhere in our area hence polluting the environment. We noticed this as an organisation and decided to take action so that these acts of polluting the environment had to stop and ensure that a solution is found immediately. The solution will ensure that waste is handled in a way that does not bring harm to the environment and is profitable to us as an organisation and has a big impact in the community. We took action and started garbage collection from households and ensuring it is dumped at the legal dumpsite that is registered by the county government. We managed to recruit youths among our area that are willing to work with us and shared the same vision that we had for the initiative that we had started. This project has managed to help solve the problem of unemployment in the community as youths both get employment.

01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).

 To create a community which is sustainable and at the same time minimize waste and creates valuable resources from waste.  To enable the community to thrive and be successful in a clean and hygienic environment.  To provide innovative and eco-friendly waste management solutions from waste collected.  To create avenues of employment to youths( both male and female) in the community.  To empower youths to engage in activities that bring sustainable solutions to waste.  To grow in the coming years and be able to provide waste management solutions to companies around jomvu sub county from only managing waste in local households in the community. This will commercialize the business to new markets that are highly profitable to the business.

 The market that the business intends to serve can be categorized according to the services or products that we offer. They are: • Garbage Collection services: Households, Shops/retail stores, Cyber Cafes, School and educational institutions, Companies in the area. • Recycling of Plastic Waste: Plastic Chairs companies, Water Tank producers, Construction materials producers. • Branded Charcoal bricks: Hotels and restaurants, Residents of the area. • Small scale Composite Manure : Local Farmers.

My patner is a good leader with good communication and problem solving skills. We have the same visions hence the reason we started this project together. We also understand each other very well and are calm in every situation in the project and also resilient in whatever situations that come up in the project.

06.08 Justification for my startup

06.09 Competitive Analysis

My major competitor is a company called Moreflow enterprises. The are a NEMA(National Environment Management Authority) licenced enterprise for:  Environmental Impact assessment of all manner of hazardous waste, handling treatment and disposal sites.  Statutory Environmental Audits.  Handling and disposal of solid waste, industrial waste and E-waste They are professional experts in establishing, implementing and sustaining ISO standards. They Currently deal with:  ISO 9001:2015  ISO 14001:2015  ISO 45001:2018 They mostly focus on serving companies and mostly focus on dumping of waste. We have an advantage as we are in the startng phase and our main goal is to ensure we recycle waste and the aspect of circular economy is achieved and implemented fully.

11.05 Are you initiating actions within your community to promote the role of female entrepreneurs?

Yes. I have lady currently in the project and willing to train her and many other ladies to embrace entrepreneurship. When the project is successful I plan to empower ladies into entrepreneurship by guiding them through training or funding them to start their own businesses.
