WasteChain is an innovative waste management application which is aimed at linking the waste generators with recyclers and garbage disposal services to enable efficient exchange, recycling, and disposal of wastes to support circular economy.

WasteChain is a brand new application created to transform waste management system throughout Zambia. Our platform brings together waste users, including households and companies, with recyclers and garbage disposal firms to ease the exchange, recycling, and disposal of waste. Waste producers can offer their waste materials, and recyclers and garbage collectors can buy such materials from our digital marketplace. Also, WasteChain has an online calendar for users to schedule waste pickups and get the best services at the right time. Thus, WasteChain’s implementation of resource efficiency, decrease of waste and support of the principles of circular economy can potentially lead to numerous positive environmental and socio-economical consequences. The platform helps in the creation of sustainable solutions since the use of waste products is encouraged, therefore minimizing landfill usage and emissions of greenhouse gases. By generating economic benefits, enhancing the well-being.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

The major issue that WasteChain tries to address is the unsustainability of current waste management systems in Zambia. Household and business consumers are major contributors to the waste problem since they have limited access to proper recycling and inadequate collection systems. It results in increased disposal of wastes in the dumping sites hence causing environmental degradation, pollution and affecting the health of the public. Additionally, useful materials which may be recovered and utilised are thrown away resulting to resource loss and high emission of carbon dioxide from the decomposition of wastes. Current approaches are disjointed and do not have a single platform to bring all the stakeholders namely the waste producers, recyclers and garbage collectors together. WasteChain solves these problems by developing a digital platform for exchanging, recycling, and disposing of waste in a more responsible and circular manner.

1. Environmental Impact: The extent of waste that is taken to landfills is considerably minimized through the use of WasteChain since the material can be reused or recycled. Not only this, but it also helps them to save natural resources and reduce environmental pollution and greenhouse gases emissions which lead to the circular economy. 2. Economic Opportunities: By connecting companies to waste management and recycling partners, WasteChain fosters new revenue streams from waste and contributes to the development of the recycling market. This leads to employment opportunities especially for the low-income earners within the waste collection, sorting and recycling teams which in turn creates economic growth at the community level. 3. Efficiency and Convenience: WasteChain is an online marketplace where waste producers provide details about the waste materials they have and recyclers or garbage collectors can directly access the details and acquire these materials.

01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?

WasteChain envisioned to provide solution to various parties that are involved in the waste management value system. Some of our direct customers include industries, construction companies, and population centers that produce substantial waste. This means that through listing the wastes materials on our platform these producer will be able to sift for eco friendly ways of either disposing the wastes or selling the wastes. Recycling facilities are in turn able to source a constant stream of recyclable material listed on WasteChain, enhancing the efficiency of the facility and decreasing procurement expenses. It will benefit garbage collection companies by helping them to increase their market target and efficiency through accessing the Website. Locals and low-income groups benefit from employment within waste collection, sorting, and recycling since it offers a source of income for such people.
