Describe your project or startup in a few words
Our project is an organic strawberry farm focused on sustainable practices. We harvest fresh strawberries and freeze overripe ones for sale, ensuring zero wastage. We aim to provide high-quality, organic produce while minimizing environmental impact.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Rasvet Sunset, located in Chikumbi Farms, Lusaka, was officially registered on July 6, 2023. Our farm employs six individuals 3 men and 3 women, and specializes in cultivating strawberries using sustainable practices like organic manure and mulching. We emphasize gender equality and engage with local communities through food markets, educational initiatives, and employment opportunities. Our strawberries are supplied to chain stores such as Cheers, Mellisa, and restaurants within Lusaka while frozen strawberries are supplied to Ciela Bonanza and other restaurants through a company known as HRVST. We leverage social media to sell 50% of our produce directly to consumers. Our mission is to prioritize food security and offer healthy products by cultivating unique strawberries in Zambia. We aim to enhance our sustainability by using solar pumps for irrigation and solar freezers for expanding our frozen strawberry capacity, thus protecting the environment.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
In Zambia, accessing affordable, locally grown strawberries year-round is challenging, leading to costly imports and limited consumption. The World Bank's 2022 report shows Zambia imported 1,477 kg of strawberries from South Africa, costing $3,210. Our collaboration with HRVST a Zambian owned Company that links farmers to market and supplies local businesses, faces a demand shortfall. Hrvst needs 2,240 kg per month to serve 86 businesses, but we and other farmers can only provide 750 kg per month, affecting both fresh and frozen strawberry supply. This reliance on imports drives up costs and restricts access to the local people. To address this, our Farm intends to ramp up production through better infrastructure, technology, and practices like greenhouse farming and crop rotation. Collaborations can enhance knowledge sharing and resources, boosting local production to meet demand and reduce import reliance, making strawberries more accessible to Zambians.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
Nutritional Benefits: Strawberries are high in vitamin C, manganese, folate, and potassium, contributing to their status as a high-value product. They are particularly beneficial for children, pregnant women, and the elderly, supporting immune function, prenatal health, and heart health. Environmental Sustainability: We use sustainable farming practices such as organic manure and mulching, and plan to implement solar pumps and solar freezers. These methods reduce our carbon footprint, conserve water, and promote soil health. Economic Impact: By supplying locally grown strawberries, we reduce reliance on imports, lower costs, and make strawberries more accessible to Zambians. Our operations create local jobs and support the economy, fostering community development. Healthier Produce: Our organically grown strawberries are free from harmful pesticides and chemicals, offering a healthier, safer option compared to imported strawberries.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Our target market in Zambia consists of three primary segments: patriates and tourists, affluent locals, and health-conscious consumers. Patriates and tourists, including both white people and Indians, appreciate the novelty and freshness of locally sourced strawberries and are willing to pay a premium for high-quality produce. Affluent locals, characterized by higher disposable incomes, seek exclusive dining experiences and value the exclusivity of fresh strawberries. They prioritize health-conscious choices and are drawn to the nutritional benefits of our product. Health-conscious consumers form a substantial part of our clientele, seeking fresh and frozen strawberries as a healthy snack or ingredient for diet drinks. They prioritize nutrition and wellness, aiming to maintain a balanced diet and healthy weight. Overall, our target market appreciates the premium quality and health benefits of our locally sourced strawberries, catering to diverse preferences and lifestyles in Zambia.

I connect many women to this organization, sharing my experiences openly to encourage them. Within the community where we grow strawberries, I've trained three women in strawberry farming; one continues under my guidance.
